Chapter Fourteen
âOi, youâre never gonna guess who I was talking to last night,â Lex said on getting into the office Thursday morning.
Patrick looked up from his paperwork. âSimon Cowell. He wants to turn you into the next Britney Spears.â
Lex stuck a finger up and swivelled it gently. âNope. Your blokeâs daughter. She went along to theatre group last night, and we got talking.â Lex hopped onto Patrickâs desk and sat there, New Rock boots swinging. Not the sort of thing Patrick would be caught dead in, but they looked wicked cool on Lex. âAnd youâre not gonna believe what we was talking about.â
âGo on then, try me.â
âWell, see, Fenâsheâs really sweet, ainât she?âsheâs not sâposed to know her dadâs queer, right? âCept she was telling me all about how thereâs this bloke he likes. This younger bloke he likes.â Patrick tried not to let the jolt that had just run through him show as Lex paused to give him a significant look. âAnd she dunât know whether to tell him she knows, thatâs her dad I mean, âcos she reckons heâs trying to keep it all a big secret, âcos he thinks sheâs like five years old or something.â
âYou talked about all this at theatre group?â he managed. It was daftâhe knew Mark liked him. Hearing it confirmed shouldnât affect him like this. Not at all.
âNah, we went to the caff for bean burgers after. She ainât even veggie, but she dinât wanna eat meat in front of meâdinât I tell you sheâs sweet? But anyway, point is, sheâs not gonna have a strop about him being gay âcos she already knows and sheâs cool with it.â
âSo did you tell her to tell him?â
Lex shrugged. âDinât know what to say, did I? I mean, usually itâs the other way round, innit? Parents what know their kidâs gay and donât know whether to say nothing. And then, they always say, like on the Internet and stuff, that the parents oughta wait for the kids to say something first. But I dinât know whether thatâs a rule, like, itâs the kids who get to bring it up whatever, or if itâs the gay person who gets to. Plus, I dunno, you reckoned he was right in the closet, yeah? So what if heâs the one having the strop if she goes and says sheâs all right with him being gay? So anyway, I thought itâd be safest if you said it.â
Patrick rolled his eyes. âRight, âcos that couldnât possibly go wrong.â
âWhat? Why would it go wrong?â
âYou never heard of shooting the messenger? Thatâs even if he doesnât jump to the conclusion Iâm the one whoâs outed him.â His eyes narrowed. âSo what exactly did you tell her about me?â
Lex looked hurt. âNuffing! Dinât even tell her I knew who she was talking about. It was all hyper-fetticals. No names mentioned on either side. I mean, when she first brung it up, I thought maybe it was âcos she knew I knew you,
